 INIQUITY
in-ik'-wi-ti (`awon; anomia): In the Old Testament of the 11 words translated "iniquity," by far the most common and important is `awon (about 215 times). Etymologically, it is customary to explain it as meaning literally "crookedness," "perverseness," i.e. evil regarded as that which is not straight or upright, moral distortion (from `iwwah, "to bend," "make crooked," "pervert"). Driver, however (following Lagarde), maintains that two roots, distinct in Arabic, have been confused in Hebrew, one equals "to bend," "pervert" (as above), and the other equals "to err," "go astray"; that `awon is derived from the latter, and consequently expresses the idea of error, deviation from the right path, rather than that of perversion (Driver, Notes on Sam, 135 note) Whichever etymology is adopted, in actual usage it has three meanings which almost imperceptibly pass into each other:

(1) iniquity,

(2) guilt of iniquity,

(3) punishment of iniquity.

Primarily, it denotes "not an action, but the character of an action" (Oehler), and is so distinguished from "sin" (chaTTa'th). Hence, we have the expression "the iniquity of my sin" (Psalm 32:5). Thus the meaning glides into that of "guilt," which might often take the place of "iniquity" as the translation of `awon (Genesis 15:16 Exodus 34:7 Jeremiah 2:22, etc.). From "guilt" it again passes into the meaning of "punishment of guilt," just as Latin piaculum may denote both guilt and its punishment. The transition is all the easier in Hebrew because of the Hebrew sense of the intimate relation of sin and suffering, e.g. Genesis 4:13, "My punishment is greater than I can bear"; which is obviously to be preferred to King James Version margin, the Revised Version, margin "Mine iniquity is greater than can be forgiven," for Cain is not so much expressing sorrow for his sin, as complaining of the severity of his punishment; compare 2 Kings 7:9 (the Revised Version (British and American) "punishment," the Revised Version margin "iniquity"); Isaiah 5:18 (where for "iniquity" we might have "punishment of iniquity," as in Leviticus 26:41, 43, etc.); Isaiah 40:2("iniquity," the Revised Version margin "punishment"). The phrase "bear iniquity" is a standing expression for bearing its consequences, i.e. its penalty; generally of the sinner bearing the results of his own iniquity (Leviticus 17:16Leviticus 20:17, 19 Numbers 14:34Ezekiel 44:10, etc.), but sometimes of one bearing the iniquity of another vicariously, and so taking it away (e.g. Ezekiel 4:4; 18:19). Of special interest in the latter sense are the sufferings of the Servant of Yahweh, who shall "bear the iniquities" of the people (Isaiah 53:11; compare Isaiah 53:6).

Other words frequently translated "iniquity" are: 'awen, literally, "worthlessness," "vanity," hence, "naughtiness," "mischief" (47 times in the King James Version, especially in the phrase "workers of iniquity," Job 4:8 Psalm 5:5Psalm 6:8 Proverbs 10:29, etc.); `awel and `awlah, literally, "perverseness" (Deuteronomy 32:4 Job 6:29 the King James Version, etc.).

In the New Testament "iniquity" stands for anomia equals properly, "the condition of one without law," "lawlessness" (so translated in 1 John 3:4, elsewhere "iniquity," e.g. Matthew 7:23), a word which frequently stood for `awon in the Septuagint; and adikia, literally, "unrighteousness" (e.g. Luke 13:27).

Iniquities are different than the sins of our fathers. An iniquity would be a sin that is committed over and over such as getting drunk time and time again; committing adultery again and again; stealing, lying, taking drugs; until it becomes a habit or the person not being able to control the sinning.
The sins of our fathers would be if our great, great grandfather committed adultery or stole something or got drunk, etc. The sins were committed but they were not habitual.
Leviticus 26:40 - 42
40) But if they confess their own and their fathers' iniquity in their treachery which they committed against Me - and also that because they walked contrary to Me,
41) I also walked contrary to them and brought them into the land of their enemies - if then their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they then accept the punishment for their iniquity,
42) Then will I [earnestly] remember My covenant with Jacob, My covenant with Isaac, and My covenant with Abraham, and [earnestly] remember the land.
Acts 3:26
26) It was to you first that God sent His Servant and Son Jesus, when He raised Him up [provided and gave Him for us], to bless you in turning every one of you from your wickedness and evil ways.
Exodus 20:5
5) You shall not bow down yourself to them (other gods) or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me.
6) But showing mercy and steadfast love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.)
Exodus 34:7
7) Keeping mercy and loving kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but Who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children, to the third and fourth generation.
Numbers 14:18
18) The Lord is long-suffering and slow to anger, and abundant in mercy and loving-kindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and fourth generation.
Deuteronomy 5:9
9) You shall not bow down to them (graven images) or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
10) And showing mercy and steadfast love to thousands and to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.)
Romans 4:7
7) Blessed and happy and to be envied are those whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered up and completely buried.
Hebrews 8:12
12) For I will be merciful and gracious toward their sins and I will remember their deeds of unrighteousness no more.
Hebrews 10:17
17) He then goes on to say, And their sins and their lawbreaking I will remember no more.
Jeremiah 16:10, 11, 17, 18
10) And when you tell these people all these words and they inquire of you, Why has the Lord decreed all this enormous evil against us? Or, What is our iniquity? Or, What is the sin that we have committed against the Lord our God?
11) Then you shall say to them, [It is] because your fathers have forsaken Me, says the Lord, and have walked after other gods and have served and worshiped them and have forsaken Me and have not kept My law.
17) For My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from My face, neither is their iniquity concealed from My eyes.
18) First [before I bring them back to their land] I will doubly recompense and punish them for their iniquity and their sin, because they have polluted My land with the carcasses of their detestable idols and with the abominable things offered to false gods with which they have filled My inheritance.
Isaiah 53:5
5) But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for out guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole.
Confess, Repent and Ask Forgiveness
Father, I confess, repent and ask your forgiveness on behalf of myself, my ancestors going back to Adam and Eve and all spouses, ex-spouses and all sex partners for the sin and iniquity of ___________________________. (Adultery, addiction, idolatry, etc.)
Break the curses
Father, in Jesus' Name, I break and loose myself from the curse of _____________. (Adultery, addiction, idolatry, etc.)
Drive out the demons
In Jesus' Name, I command the demons associated with the curse of _____________ to come out of me. (Also, be specific on the names of the demons as the Lord leads you.)
Leviticus 26:40-42 "But if they confess their own and their fathers' iniquity in their treachery which they committed against Me - and also that because they walked contrary to Me, I also walked contrary to them and brought them into the land of their enemies - if then their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they then accept the punishment for their iniquity, Then will I [earnestly] remember My covenant with Jacob, My covenant with Isaac, and My covenant with Abraham, and [earnestly] remember the land."
Exodus 34:7 "Keeping mercy and loving kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but Who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children, to the third and fourth generation."
The Word of God speaks of confessing the iniquities of our ancestors. The Lord says that their iniquities are passed down to the third and fourth generations. That's 160 years. My, my, what were our ancestors doing 160 years ago? I don't have any idea. So to be safe I confess their iniquities as well as my own.
An iniquity is a sin that is committed over and over such as getting drunk time and time again; committing adultery again and again; stealing, lying, taking drugs; until it becomes a habit and the person is not able to control himself. The sins of our fathers would be if our great, great grandfather committed adultery or stole something or got drunk, etc. The sins were committed but they were not habitual or addictive.
If alcoholism is a problem in your family, then an iniquity is involved. If heart disease, cancer, mental illness, adultery, lawlessness, etc. are a problem in your family line then there is an iniquity there.

A sample prayer to break these bondages would be as follows:

Father, in JESUS' Name, I confess, repent and ask your forgiveness on my behalf and on the behalf of my ancestors going back 10 generations for the iniquity of (idolatry, witchcraft, adultery, incest, bitterness, unforgiveness, etc.) Amen.
Then break the curse of the iniquity and cast the demons OUT in JESUS' Name.
